Affiliated Groups

Many statewide non-profit organizations are affiliated with NJEA and are members of the NJEA Affiliated Groups Council.

Along with group-sponsored meetings at the NJEA Convention, many hold statewide conferences, inservice programs, seminars, and workshops to upgrade members' educational skills. Many have professional publications and strive to develop better public understanding of the importance of jobs in that field.

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION

Alternative Education Assn. of N.J. (AEANJ)

AEANJ is an organization dedicated to supporting a full range of educational options for students whose needs are not being met in the traditional school setting. Membership is open to those working in alternative education or those interested in encouraging development of alternative education options. AEANJ disseminates information relating to research, publications, and programs in alternative education, and holds a spring conference. Members receive workshop announcements, consulting services, and resource materials. Art Educators of N.J. (AENJ)

AENJ is a professional organization of art educators teaching preK-higher education in public, private, parochial and charter schools as well as museum educators and art education students. N.J. Business Technology Education Assn. (NJBTEA)

NJBTEA’s mission is to serve as an advocate for business/technology education within the state and provide opportunities for professional growth leading to quality business/technology education programs. N.J. Assn. for Educational Technology (NJAET)

N.J. Assn. for Educational Technology (NJAET) is an organization dedicated to helping teachers use technology to improve learning. Membership, which is free for anyone interested in educational technology, provides a semi-monthly newsletter, quarterly online journal, and other professional development activities. NJAET also offers three $2,000 mini-grants for the innovative use of educational technology. The mini-grant application deadline is Dec. 1. The annual conference will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at Georgian Court University in Lakewood. This year’s theme, “In Tune with Technology,” will be addressed in over 40 presentations and hands-on sessions. N.J. Marketing Education Assn. (NJMEA)

NJMEA, formerly the N.J. N.J. Technology Education Assn. (NJTEA)

NJSEC was founded in 1923 to secure cooperation, good fellowship, and fair dealing among educational salespeople, and to improve the ethics of school textbook and educational equipment selling. N.J. Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages/ N.J. Bilingual Educators (NJTESOL/ NJBE)

NJTESOL/NJBE is the professional organization of English as a Second Language and bilingual education teachers for all levels. It sponsors several conferences throughout the year and keeps members informed through newsletters and a Hot List (listserv) from the website. The organization is very involved in advocacy/political action and collaborative activities with other professional organizations. Membership is open to all educators interested in keeping abreast of current information on educating bilingual and English language learners (ESL students). N.J. Assn. for Gifted Children (NJAGC)

N.J. Association for Gifted Children (NJAGC) is an organization of educators, parents and concerned community members committed to the education of the gifted and talented. Its educator division is designed to serve the needs of all educators, guidance counselors, and administrators, providing quality regional events and several annual statewide conferences and other events. N.J. Cooperative Education Coordinators Assn. (NJCECA)

NJCECA in an organization for teachers who are involved in job placement. NJCECA membership provides guidance, resources, and outreach for teachers to enhance their work-study programs and collaborate in program planning. Meetings are held at various sponsoring secondary education sites the third Thursday of each month and presentations by various organizations are given. NJCECA is a professional development provider, therefore, members receive two hours of professional development at each meeting they attend. N.J. School Counselor Assn. (NJSCA)

NJSCA works to advance the profession of school counseling in order to maximize the personal, social, educational, and vocational growth of each student, elementary through post-secondary. HIGHER EDUCATION

Assn. of N.J. County College Faculties (ANJCCF)

ANJCCF serves as a liaison among the faculty members of the county colleges and makes concerted actions possible on matters of mutual concern. It provides a forum for county college faculties, promoting the concept of public higher education as a basic function and responsibility of the state. HOLOCAUST EDUCATION

The Council of Holocaust Educators (CHE)

The Council of Holocaust Educators (CHE) is a professional development organization for educators who teach about the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights. CHE grew out of a long-standing need for educators to organize as professionals and to become a voice for teachers and students participating in Holocaust/genocide education. CHE is committed to the effort to instill in our students a sense of the importance of recognizing and respecting the value of each individual human life and the human dignity of all people as a deterrent to future genocide and to foster a peaceful world community. The organization is founded on the principle that we as educators have an obligation to preserve the memory of victims of the Holocaust and genocides and to educate students about the evils that led to these programs of massive human destruction. NJAKE is an organization of kindergarten and early childhood educators. N.J. Council of Teachers of English (NJCTE)

NJCTE is an association for educators in English studies, literacy, and language arts. Most members are teachers from elementary grades through college/university in public and private schools. NJCTE organizes regional and statewide conferences, sponsors a free annual writing contest, maintains a website and a presence on Facebook and Twitter, and produces a newsletter and an annual journal. N.J. Music Educators Assn. (NJMEA)

NJMEA is an organization of general, choral and instrumental music educators, preK through college, in public, private and parochial schools. The organization sponsors a variety of professional development opportunities and advocacy efforts that focus on emerging trends and issues in music education. Members’ students may audition for Region ensembles as well as All-State Chorus, Orchestra, Band and Jazz Ensemble. N.J. State School Nurses Assn. (NJSSNA)

NJSSNA is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the practice of school nursing and serves as the voice for New Jersey’s school nurses.  In 2010, NJSSNA proudly affiliated with the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), enabling New Jersey’s school nurses a new level of professional support and advocacy.  The organization upholds the published standards of practice of the American Nurses Association and NASN, the statutes and regulations of both the N.J. Board of Nursing and the N.J. Department of Education.

According to NASN, school nursing is defined as a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well-being, academic success and life-long achievement and health of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health and safety including a healthy environment; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

Membership is open to certified school nurses and other stakeholders interested in promoting and supporting school nursing practice. Membership is on a rolling basis and the levels are listed on the NJSSNA website at http://www.njssna.org/. Since NJSSNA is now an affiliate of NASN, members reap the benefits of both national and state-level experience, leadership and advocacy. PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH

N.J. Assn. for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (NJAHPERD)

NJAHPERD is a service organization dedicated to advancing quality health education, physical education, recreation, and dance education through professional development, programming, advocacy, and collegial exchange. The association promotes the development of healthy active lifestyles for New Jersey’s students, educators and community members. Our advocacy campaign, Every Child Stronger, Every Life Longer, is a comprehensive action plan to improve the quality of health and physical education programs and physical activity in schools.

NJAHPERD offers a wide range of professional development opportunities throughout the year in collaboration with various partners who share our mission. The 2012 annual convention at Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch will feature over 100 quality sessions, preconvention programs, a Fun Run/Walk for charity, awards banquet and exhibitor displays. Other workshops and conferences include the Lake Conference for K-8 Physical Education, Adapted Conference, Election Day Conference, Hands-On Health Conference, Future Professionals Workshops, and Regional Fitness Education and Fitnessgram Training workshops. Many other professional development opportunities are available as co-sponsored events.

Members are eligible to apply for mini-grants and professional development grants to enhance their programs. Online publications include a bi-weekly FYI newsletter, and the REPORTER journal, focusing on a relevant professional theme. A dynamic website and listserv keep members informed of relevant information in the profession. NJAHPERD structure provides leadership opportunities in elected positions and committees for professionals and future professionals. NJAHPERD is a proud partner with the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart programs and an affiliate of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD).

N.J. Assn. of Speech Language Specialists (NJASLS)

NJASLS is a group dedicated to advocating for students with communication disabilities that affect or have an impact upon their educational performance. NJASLS also helps secure the conditions necessary for maximum efficacy of the speech language specialist practice, advances the standards of the profession of speech language pathology in an educational setting, and actively promotes the interests of members. Speech and Theatre Assn. of N.J. (STANJ)

STANJ is just completing 50 years as the NJEA affiliate for speech and theatre education is dedicated to fostering excellence in the speech and theatre arts, promoting the arts in academic study, and advocating on behalf of its members. The group is composed of K–college educators, high school and college students, artists, and professionals in speech, theater, communications and related arts. Assn. of Student Assistance Professionals of N.J. (ASAP-NJ)

ASAP-NJ is an organization of individuals employed in schools, agencies, or school-based programs whose functions include advocating and developing a school-based student assistance/substance awareness program. The group seeks to meet the needs of New Jersey youth in education, prevention, intervention, and referral services in the area of high-risk behaviors, including substance abuse and violence issues. CERTIFIED ATHLETIC TRAINERS

Athletic Trainer's Society of N.J. (ATSNJ)

ATSNJ is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the athletic training profession in New Jersey. Composed primarily of medical professionals licensed by the State Board of Medical Examiners, it continually strives to ensure that physically active persons receive the best possible health care. Vocational Cosmetology Educators Assn. of N.J. (VCEANJ)

VCEANJ is an organization of and provides a forum for certified cosmetology instructors from comprehensive and vocational schools. Career and Technical Education Assn. of N.J. (CTEANJ)

CTEANJ works to upgrade the quality and expand the quantity of Career and Technical education courses and programs offered by schools. The association provides and/or sponsors professional development activities related to career and technical issues and trends. CTEANJ is proud to dedicate funds to an annual scholarship program and members may nominate deserving Career and Technical education students. Thanks to unification with the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE), members receive additional benefits, including trade publications, national advocacy for career and technical education, legislative updates, and the opportunity to attend national CTE conventions.

Foreign Language Educators of N.J. (FLENJ)

FLENJ represents world language teachers (K-college). It advances and promotes the teaching of world languages, literatures, and cultures. FLENJ offers workshops as well as a statewide meeting in the spring on topics of current interest to the profession and the latest developments in methodology, materials, and technology. New Jersey Chapter of the American Assn. of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (NJAATSP)

Our chapter is composed of AATSP members who live and/or teach in New Jersey. It promotes the teaching of Spanish and Portuguese languages as well as their cultures and literatures at all educational levels. NJAATSP offers professional support to its members through workshops, seminars, its web site (www.njaatsp.org), and a summer program for Spanish teachers at the Universidad de Alcala in Spain. It also coordinates the National Spanish Examination for middle and high school students in our state, and holds an annual Spanish Essay Contest for high school seniors. Dues are $65 a year for both national and state membership; $45 for first-year members, and $25 for students. Membership dues also entitle members to receive Hispana, the official journal of AATSP published four times a year.
