Franklin Borough School (Sussex County) Social Studies teacher Jennifer L. Mross is bringing history to life for 60 fifth grade students thanks to a $2,607 grant from the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education.
Rather than relying on a standard textbook, Mross's students will be introduced to historical events and characters through historical fiction books.
Mross will teach her students the skills necessary for debates, informational interviews, critiques of literature, historical fiction simulations, script writing, and map making. As part of the learning experience, students will create their own short stories and mini books to share with children in the lower grades.
The project will conclude with a community-wide Social Studies Fair at which parents and others can view students' work in a variety of multi-media, from simple displays to performances.
