Saturday Morning Science

Atlantic County educators Dr. Linda Szypula, Mrs. K. Lynn Myers, and Kelli Wenzel help students produce their own educational science show at the Fernwood Middle School through a $10,000 grant from the NJEA Frederick L. Hipp Foundation for Excellence in Education. The show airs on the local educational channel on Saturday mornings during the school year.

The show helps students understand basic science concepts and connect science to their daily lives in an entertaining way. The program also serves as turn-key professional development for teachers, as each episode has a newsletter outlining the monthly theme and a website where teachers, parents, and students can access additional enrichment activities.

A newsletter is sent home to parents during the first week of school announcing the program. The students open the show with questions to the viewers. The end of the show features questions in a jeopardy game format to reinforce learning.

The culminating event is a celebration including all participants of the show and guest student scientists, their families, teachers, and all volunteers.
