We Are One

Stand up for public education and public employees

We Are OneThe dramatic events in Wisconsin over the past several days are a pivotal battle in the national struggle over the future of America’s public schools and public sector unions. The fight being waged by our colleagues in the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) and thousands of other workers and supportive citizens is inspiring and vitally important to all of us. As they seek to stop passage of legislation that would destroy collective bargaining and impose unprecedented economic hardship on WEAC members, they need our help and involvement.

Make no mistake: the outcome in Wisconsin will have an enormous influence on other states, including New Jersey, where like-minded governors are more than willing to follow Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's example. This past Friday, Governor Christie said he fully supported Walker's efforts to smash the rights of unionized teachers and other public employees in Wisconsin. (See NJEA's response to Christie's comments.)

Wisconsin's fight is OUR fight.

NJEA members are urged to stand up for public education and public school employees – here in New Jersey and across the country.

VP Steinhauer Travels to Wisconsin
Lends NJEA’s support to WEAC colleagues

NJEA Vice President Wendell Steinhauer traveled to Wisconsin recently to lend NJEA’s support to the courageous members of the Wisconsin Education Association Council (WEAC) and other public employee unions there who are engaged in a battle to protect their collective bargaining rights. Here, Wendell talks about his experience in Wisconsin and what lessons NJEA members can take from their colleagues there as we fight to protect public education and public school employees here in New Jersey.

More Information

This protest is about public sector employees retaining a voice in their profession and Wisconsin's future. The proposed legislation strips away worker rights and destroys the collaborative partnerships that have been established between labor and management in Wisconsin. It's not about pay and benefits, pensions and health care, as conservative pundits would have you believe. It's about the right of workers to have a VOICE.

What is happening right now in Wisconsin is historic. Tens of thousands of citizens -- unprecedented numbers -- are gathering and speaking out to show their support for the state's public employees.

It's time to join them in this struggle, which is already at our doorsteps.
