Legislative Update - June 10, 2010

A-949 (Vanieri Huttle, Wagner, Voss, Greenstein)/S-375(Weinberg, Gordon), supported by NJEA, would add transparency to the conversion process of a health insurance corporation to a for-profit insurer. It would add extra hearings and require a health impact study, as well as requiring that any proceeds from the conversion be used to promote improvements in health care. The bill, which already passed in the Senate,unanimously passed in the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee where it was amended to match the Senate version,and has been referred to the Assembly Appropriations Committee.

A-444 (Green, Bramnick, Connors, Conaway) was favorably released by the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee and is now ready for consideration by the full Assembly. The bill, supported by the NJEA, would disqualify any member of a board of education for convictions of certain crimes and requires members to undergo criminal background checks.
