Current Legislation - Sept. 16, 2010

MODEL CONTRACTS FOR SUPERINTENDENTS: A-406 (Diegnan, Cryan, Casagrande, Lampitt) was released by the Assembly Education Committee and is now on second reading in the Assembly.  The legislation calls for the Commissioner of Education to develop a model contract for superintendents.  NJEA opposed the legislation and requested a series of amendments prior to the bill being voted on in the full Assembly.

Dating Violence Bill:  A-2920 Aca (1R) (Wolfe, Voss) This bill requires the DOE to establish a task force to develop a policy to prevent and address dating violence.  The task force makes recommendations to the state on ways to incorporate age appropriate dating violence education into the health education curriculum.  The bill is part of a national movement spurned by the death of a college woman by her boyfriend.  The two had been in an abusive relationship for years which went undetected.  It passed the Assembly Education Committee unanimously, and goes to the Assembly floor for a vote.  NJEA did not take a position on the bill.
