Major provisions of A-2492

  • Each school will have a temperature-controlled environment.
  • Districts will strive to keep temperatures in occupied rooms between 68º and 79º F.
  • When temperatures are below 63 F or above 89 F, staff and students are to be relocated.
  • The Department of Health and Senior Services (and possibly PEOSH) must inspect any school in which staff and students have been relocated more than twice in one school year.
  • Feasible short term measures should be implemented when heat is excessive, such as limiting athletic activity and using fans.
  • Feasible long-term measures should be implemented, including installing energy-efficient windows, ceiling fans, air conditioners and window shades.
