NJEA supports A-694 (Ramos). This bill requires hospital, medical and health service corporations, group insurers, health maintenance organizations and the state Health Benefits Commission to provide continuation of health insurance coverage to former employees and their beneficiaries when the employee’s employment was terminated for a reason other than for cause. Employees could be charged up to 102% of the premium paid under the group health plan. The bill also provides the same provision for small employer health benefit plans.
NJEA supports this bill because it would allow former employees who are laid off for reasons other than cause to keep their health insurance indefinitely, as long as the employer was still providing insurance, the former employee or beneficiary continued to pay the premium, and was not entitled to other coverage. Continuation of insurance coverage is beneficial to individuals and their families.
