Requires health insurance coverage for treatment of substance use disorders; places certain restrictions on the prescription of opioid and certain other drugs; concerns continuing education related thereto.

NJEA supports S-3 (Vitale, Sweeney).  This bill would require health insurance coverage for inpatient and outpatient treatment of substance use disorders and regulates opioids and certain other prescription drugs.

Substance abuse is a growing crisis both nationally and here in New Jersey.  Those who seek treatment for substance abuse should not have to worry about being denied coverage by their health insurance company.  This bill addresses this issue, by requiring coverage when deemed medically necessary.

NJEA believes that changes to plan design in the School Employees Health Benefits Program (SEHBP) should go through the SEHBP Plan Design Committee.   However, we also understand that there are times when changes to all health insurance programs offered in New Jersey need to be covered by legislation.  This is one of those situations, where all health insurance programs in New Jersey should give members access to substance abuse coverage without the fear of denial.

NJEA asks you to support S-3.
