Full-day kindergarten has become more and more necessary as expectations for early literacy have increased. Three hours a day of instruction is not enough to teach and reinforce the skills that kindergarteners are expected to master before entering first grade. Full-day programs are far more effective and beneficial to students.
Sadly, in an era of decreased state funding for education, too many districts are moving in the wrong direction, leaving nearly 25,000 students with only half-day kindergarten. NJEA will support legislation requiring every district to provide full-day kindergarten so that every student gets a great start.
