Public funds for private benefit
Some current proposals would divert hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars—and perhaps more—to private school operators and for-profit education management companies. The so- called Opportunity Scholarship Act, a private school voucher bill, would funnel nearly $1 billion from the public treasury to subsidize private and parochial schools. Other proposals would increase the role of for-profit school management companies in running public schools in New Jersey, including public charter schools.
New Jersey taxpayers deserve to know that the resources they invest in public education are going to benefit students in public schools. We cannot allow a private takeover of public education under the guise of reform or efficiency.
