The campaign of NJEA member and LD 16 Assembly candidate Marie Corfield received a huge boost this week. The national Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee announced that the Corfield campaign garnered more grassroots support than any other legislative contest in the country in a search to identify essential legislative races across America. The DLCC noted
that Corfield “became a YouTube sensation in 2010 when her vigorous defense
of public schools at a town hall meeting provoked an angry response from GOP Governor Chris Christie and an even angrier stream of abusive emails and Facebook postings attacking Corfield.”
Though her race was not initially included in a list of 50 key legislative races identified by the DLCC, the number of nominations she received from grassroots supporters rocketed her to the top of the list, impressing the national organization with the extremely high level of support Marie has garnered for her race. DLCC Executive Director Michael Sargeant told Bluejersey.com, “it's clear that both parties have made this race a priority, and the flood of nominations this race received was a clear reflection of tremendous grassroots interest in the outcome of this election."
Corfield earned an endorsement from NJEA’s PAC Operating Committee earlier this year and is running a competitive race in a difficult district.
