NJEA Vice President Wendell Steinhauer spoke in support of raising the minimum wage and tying future increases to cost of living at a Nov. 19 press conference sponsored by Citizen Action. Pointing out the correlation between poverty and student achievement, Steinhauer urged the Senate to advance the bill and send it to the governor for his signature.
“As educators, we never want to see our students fall behind. Likewise… we don’t want to see their parents fall behind on their ability to provide food, housing, health care, and support for our students. We MUST tie future increases to the cost of living so that the parents of our most vulnerable students can keep up when the cost of food, heat, gasoline, and transportation go up.”
