Last fall, staff in NJEA Communications negotiated an advertising contract with CBS that included an unusual perk. A portion of NJEA’s advertising contract would be put into a grant that would be awarded on NJEA’s behalf.
The Volunteers of America’s Home for the Brave in Camden city was awarded a $7,500 grant thanks to NJEA. Home for the Brave is a 30-bed shelter for homeless veterans that opened earlier this year, and is already at full capacity with a waiting list.
NJEA’s grant will be used for educational materials to help these vets gain their GEDs, learn job skills and money management, and engage in life skills training. The grant will also cover classroom supplies and a projector, as well as linens, toiletries and cleaning supplies.
NJEA Volunteer Day
To commemorate this partnership, Volunteers of America and NJEA are coordinating an NJEA Volunteer Day at the shelter on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Active, retired, and student NJEA members—both teachers and ESP—as well as their students, families and friends are invited to help. Most of the activities will take place later in the day after school hours.
NJEA volunteers can come to the Home for the Brave to work one-on-one with veterans on GED and Adult Education tutoring programs (approximately 1-2 hours of tutoring.)
NJEA volunteers can also come to the adjacent Aletha Wright Vision of Hope Center (neighboring 99-bed housing program) to assist with GED and Adult Education tutoring (approximately 1-2 hours of tutoring). They may also need assistance in the cafeteria preparing for dinner.
NJEA volunteers can participate in homework help and tutoring at the Anna Sample Complex, which is a 65-bed Transitional Housing program for homeless families located just a couple blocks away from the Home for the Brave.
The volunteer activities will kick-off with remarks and a photo opportunity at the Home for the Brave, after which volunteers will disperse to their respective locations for tutoring.
