U.S. Senate special election slated for Oct. 16

Gov. Chris Christie ordered a special election this year to fill the vacancy left by the death of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg. It will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Republican Steve Lonegan and Democrat Cory Booker won their party’s primary election in August and will vie for the Senate seat.

The voter registration deadline for the special election is Wednesday, Sept. 25. The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot by mail is Oct. 9; the deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot in person is Oct. 15 by 3 p.m.

The regular general election, which features a gubernatorial contest and the election of every state Senate and Assembly seat, will still be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The registration deadline for the Nov. 5 election is Oct. 15.
