What happens in the schoolhouse is affected by what happens in the Statehouse. That’s why when it comes to legislation and politics, it’s vital that NJEA members get educated, get organized and get involved. The 2017 NJEA Walter J. O’Brien Legislative and Political Action Conference provides you with an opportunity for all three.
The conference is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 18, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Doubletree by Hilton Somerset Hotel and Conference Center.
This year’s conference will feature five breakouts organized by issues important to you and public education. Legislators will engage in discussions focused on the following issues:
Federal – Join key members of Congress in a critical conversation about the Trump administration’s plans for public education. Learn how New Jersey’s congressional delegation plans to deal with the new leadership in Washington.
Health Benefits - The cost of health benefits is an ongoing discussion. Come hear legislators’ thoughts on how to contain health care costs, address the issues caused by Chapter 78, and preserve health benefits for retirees.
Pensions – Learn about the latest policies impacting your pensions, how they are funded and proposals for ensuring their long-term solvency.
School Funding – Participate in a discussion on state aid, the School Funding Reform Act (SFRA), and the impact of charter schools on school district finances.
Urban Education and Privatization – Join a conversation about state takeover districts and return to local control, issues facing urban communities, the challenges facing students and educators, and the privatization of public education and jobs.
Join us to hear directly from elected officials about these critical issues.
