What do you do at your general membership meetings?
It is customary for locals to host a meeting with all their members prior to the start of the school year. Many locals do this the morning of the district’s orientation day.
What do you do with your local at this meeting? Here are some possibilities:
1. Each year NJEA Communications creates what’s known as the back to school speech. It highlights many of the issues unfolding statewide and nationally. The speech is completely customizable and is made available to local presidents. To receive your copy for the coming year, reach out to your NJEA UniServ field rep.
2. Many locals highlight their members for their outstanding accomplishments—both personally and professionally. Consider honoring all your members who earned tenure as well as those who have reached their five year, ten year, 25 year, and 30 year anniversaries. You could create a certificate for each, and NJEA now offers 10 year and 25 year veteran pins that you can over via your UniServ office.
3. Consider outlining the association’s goals for the year, including events that your PRIDE and social committees will host. Your general membership meeting presents you with a great opportunity to let your members know about these events, and considering asking members to sign up to attend them.
4. At your general membership meeting, its nice to have your officers and committee chairs address your members. This helps members put a face to your team, and it keeps the agenda moving.
These are just some suggestions. As always, reach out to your NJEA UniServ field rep for help planning your general membership meeting. And – we’d love to hear what else you do at this meeting, so feel free to post below and tell your story.
