Does your local have a role at BOE meetings?

Postby JimBoice » December 18th, 2013, 11:02 am

Many locals have a team of members who attend each BOE meeting and reports the business conducted there back to the local leadership and general membership.

We heard a creative idea recently that sparked the idea for this thread. We'll post the idea here and continue to be on the lookout for other things that your local can do to

-- encourage members to attend the meetings.
-- promote association activities (i.e. PRIDE) at BOE meetings.
-- etc.

1. Share your PRIDE events!

This is a reprint of #119 from the Ideas to Reach All Members thread: http://www.njea.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=33&start=110

How do you encourage members to attend BOE meetings?

We recently met the president of a local who has a lot of success with members attending each month’s BOE meeting. The local encourages members to sign up for a “BOE watch” at its general membership meeting. The president takes a piece of the meeting to explain the importance of attending BOE meetings, and members sign up immediately afterwards. This president also does the same thing with prospective PRIDE events.

Learn more about the PRIDE program here in #74: http://www.njea.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=33&start=70

2. Ask your members to have their students perform at the BOE meeting.

This idea came to us from another state, where at least one local asks members to have their students perform during the BOE meeting. Such a performance could take place near the beginning of the meeting. A school's band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, drama club, color guard, step team, etc. could start the meeting with something exciting. This initiative would draw parents to the meetings, some of which may stay following the performance. The students would also appreciate this opportunity to perform. Your local could use the PRIDE program to fund refreshments for the community.
