180. This one goes with #'s 29, 43, and 65 -- all of which deal with recognition members through handwritten cards (thank you, congratulations, etc.).

One of our UniServ field reps gave us this idea. It's nice to recognize members when they earn an advanced degree. Keep an eye on your Board of Education minutes, and whenever your members move a column across the guide, you could send them a congratulations card. You could check out the Board of Education section on leaves to keep up with your members who put in for a maternity leave and send them a congratulations card as well.

181. Do your members use Donor's Choose to fundraise for classroom projects?

More and more educators are turning to http://www.donorschoose.org to raise funds for a special project or classroom need. In fact, you may be surprised to see so many of your members using the site, and you can easily fund them by searching for your city or town after you create an account.

Encourage your members to let you know when they are using the site to raise funds. You could advertise them in a newsletter or flier and also let everyone know when your members reach their fundraising goals. It would be nice to follow-up with members to see how they are using the funds and how the classroom projects are going.

182. Invite guests to your rep council meetings!

We got this idea from another of our UniServ field reps. He recommends that each of his local presidents invite a different group of members to each rep council meeting. For example, in October, all the members who are paraprofessionals might be invited. In January, maybe all the foreign language teachers could be invited. In this way, more members know what's happening within their local association, and it gives the local president a chance to thank and spotlight certain groups of members for their hard work.

183. Take a picture of a group of your members!

We got this idea from two locals:

1. The paraprofessionals of the Old Bridge EA took a picture of themselves for use in this flier:http://www.njea.org/njea-media/pdf/ESP_WhoWeAreFlier_Paras.pdf?1400178332093

2. Members from the Frankford Township EA (Warren County) recently applied for PRIDE funding to have a billboard made of a picture of a large group of members.

You could use a picture like this in your promotional efforts. And . . . it's fun to get a big group of people together for a picture.

184. Are any of your members former NJSEA (New Jersey Student Education Association) members?

NJSEA members are college students who will one day be NJEA members. You can learn more about the NJSEA here: http://www.njea.org/members/student-members

NJSEA members tend to be more educated about the importance of advocating for their profession than other newer members.

During your new member orientation, it may be beneficial to ask if any of your new members were NJSEA members. Then, consider approaching them to get more involved.

185. Share special promotional offers from NEA Member Benefits, including the NEA Cash Rewards Card.

Member Benefits is mentioned throughout these suggestions (#'s 52, 90, 95, 135, and 154 come to mind), but keep your eyes peeled for offers from NEA member benefits, too, including this interesting credit card offer:

http://www.neamb.com/cash-back-states.htm

Some 40,000 NJEA members have become Cash Reward Card members--more than any other NEA state affiliate. Try sharing this great offer with your members.

186. Keep track of your members on your association bulletin boards!

This one goes with #’s 46 (“Hang a local association bulletin board in your schools’ faculty lounges!”), 96 (“Host a contest with your building reps for the best association bulletin board!”), and 137 (“Post a bulletin board to welcome all of your new members!”).

On your schools’ association bulletin boards, consider posting the percentage of your members that are NJEA members. Then, post the percentage of district staff that are NJEA members. You could also offer the number of members and staff in each category.

We got this idea from one of our field reps, who saw an old, outdated association bulletin board in a school lounge. She says the bulletin board hadn’t been updated in years and reflected a time when the local association was signing members up to be NJEA members. The field rep thought it would be fun to continue this practice, believing that members may feel good about knowing that they are connected to their local associations, which are much bigger than themselves.

187. Schedule time for your new members to chat with veteran members in your buildings.

Orientation for new members is a hectic time. Try to schedule some time (maybe just an hour) for your new members to sit down with a veteran member or two from each building. There doesn't have to be a formal agenda for these meetings; the goal can simply be to provide your new members with a place for all their questions to be answered.

We got this idea from members of the Bloomfield Education Association.

188. Lift your members' spirits by making them aware of good news!

Morale is down in a lot of places. You and your members can work to overcome this by reminding your members just how much they matter.

We got this idea from our recent class of Sparks (Learn more here: https://www.njea.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=149).

On the last Friday of every month, you could put a little message in all members' mailboxes that highlights a local, county, or state fact about schools. It could highlight your district's graduation rate, percentage of students who go to college, number of students who participated in something, etc. Feel free to use the good news selections from njea.org: http://www.njea.org/about/who-we-are/good-news.

Hopefully when members see the fact, they will feel good. They may even be surprised and share it!

189. Host an open house for your members!

Does your local association have an office? Do your members know where it is? Why not invite members over for a little get-together, with music, food, etc. Members can take a look around, meet the association officers and exec. board members, and learn more about how the association can help them. Be sure to reach out to your NJEA UniServ field rep for NJEA informational brochures, resources, posters, etc.

If your local association does not have an office, no problem. Host your event in a fun location as a nice get together.
