61. Create an association magnet!

Members need to know who to contract in case of an emergency. One effective way to get help members keep this information in a safe place is to create an association magnet. Your magnet could highlight the names of your association officers (along with their roles) as well as building head reps along with their contract information. Don't forget to list the name of your NJEA UniServ field representative and the contract number for the local UniServ office.

Consider designing your magnet to include your local association logo and/or pictures of your schools. Have fun!

62. Host an Advocate Appreciation Night!

Host a dinner to celebrate the accomplishments of all your members who take time out of their busy schedules to support the local association. These could be building reps, committee chairs, etc. -- really anyone who has given time to support the local association in its initiatives. Spend a little time thanking them and consider offering them a gift. This would be a great venue to detail a little bit of the association's history (i.e. how many years has the association been in existence, can you share a copy of the first contract, etc.).

It would be nice to offer all your reps who attended every rep council meeting of the year with a certificate. In fact, all members could receive a certificate for their accomplishments! :D

Have fun with your event! Your members make your local association special -- take the time to celebrate them!

63. Host a member appreciation breakfast!

This event is a companion to #32 (Host a new member event at a local restaurant after the school day). Try inviting your members to a breakfast sponsored by the association before the start of the school day. Breakfasts work very well before in-service programs as many district have cut the expense out of their budgets. Invite members to come by, have a cup of coffee and a bagel, listen to a short presentation from the building rep (which could be a 10 minute meeting), or check out some upcoming events information. Have fun!

64. Sponsor a book club for your members!

Book clubs are becoming increasingly popular. How about sponsoring one for your members? Your members could choose to read books that will improve their practice in the classroom, but any fiction or non-fiction good read will work! This is a great way to bring your members closer and establish camaraderie in your building. Maybe your local association could provide a snack and refreshment for the discussions? Members may even open up their homes and offer to host the meetings! Try it!

65. Put your members on blast!

This one goes with #23: Host an association awards ceremony. As members step up and volunteer their time at association activities (participation in PRIDE events, attendance at workshops, etc.), send a thank you to the members and let the rest of your membership know who is stepping up. You could do this via email or include a list in your association newsletter. Members involvement in association activities can be contagious, and if members know others are stepping up, they may be more likely to step up themselves.

Then, remember to recognize these members at your association awards ceremony (#23).

66. Write a letter to each of your members!

This one is a companion to #39 -- handwritten thank you cards go a looonnnggg waaayyy. When you are asking for involvement from your members, encourage them with a heartfelt letter. You don't have to handwrite a letter to each of your members (typing one up and distributing it to everyone will work just fine), but it's nice to print each member's name on the top and sign the bottom. You could encourage the members of your exec board to do this as well. This may help some of your members to get more involved as some may step up due to their relationship with you or the author of the letter.

67: Encourage your members to attend professional development events and conferences. Your county association offers a wide-range of PD workshops each year. Try promote these workshops to your members via email, fliers in mailboxes, word of mouth, etc. Work with your NJEA UniServ field rep to prepare a series of local PD workshops targeted to your members’ needs.

Of course, the annual NJEA Convention is open to all members; how about chartering a bus to help members attend? Learn more about the NJEA Convention here: http://www.njea.org/teaching-and-learning/pdo-convention

Other NJEA PD opportunities (including online PD) are described here: http://www.njea.org/teaching-and-learning/professional-development-main

Here is some information on NJEA's ESP Academy: http://www.njea.org/teaching-and-learning/espacademy

Don’t neglect new and exciting workshop opportunities for your members. The EdCamp movement is garnering a lot of attention, and members are excited by its “unconference” format. After learning about it, your members may step up to present an EdCamp workshop. Learn more about EdCamp here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EdCamp

68. Develop a Trends in Education newsletter with your members!

Are your new members starting clubs and organizations that are new to the building? Are they running contests with students, creating new initiatives, or facilitating cutting-edge lessons? How can you help these new members showcase the new trends that they are exploring?

Consider creating an association newsletter called something to the effect of Trends in Education. Maintain that the publication be written by new members, and use it to let all members know about these new practices and techniques that are becoming popular. These can also be explored in SOS meetings (https://www.njea.org/resources/sos).

In order to generate content, ask all your new members to write a piece that describes something that they are doing in the classroom that is new – something cutting edge, their best practices. Let these members show off a little via a piece in the newsletter.

Search for a member who can compile the articles. Use pictures of the members. When it’s complete, share it with your members, administrators, and BOE members.

Consider publishing your newsletter once or twice a year. Maybe your editor can share it with the BOE when it is ready at a special presentation.

69. Host a local Sparks event!

Sparks is a long established NJEA program that runs on a statewide level. However, local associations report success in running the program on the local level.

On the state level, Sparks is one of NJEA’s programs used to develop a new generation of leaders retain new teachers and ESPs. Its history begins in 2005-06, when NJEA launched a pilot Sparks program to identify highly motivated, energized, and talented future leaders for the Association. The program exceeded NJEA’s` wildest expectations. After participating in a unique training/orientation program, the first class of Sparks went back to their locals and got involved – as officers, committee and PRIDE chairs, and activists. Others jumped right into county and statewide NJEA involvement. For example, one former Spark has even become an NJEA field rep! These Sparks had potential, and the Sparks program helped them to realize it.

To run a Sparks program on the local level, start by reaching out to your NJEA UniServ field representative for assistance. Target the event at your newer members, those with five years of experience or less, and those who have that spark! Your event could take the form of an overnight workshop that offers members team building exercises as well as presentations that introduce your members to everything that your association and NJEA provides, workshops exploring basic grievance and collective bargaining principals, community engagement tips, etc.

Sparks can provide your newer members with an exciting introduction to your association and encourage them to get involved.

Added on 8.12: we recently met a couple of locals holding their own versions of the Sparks programs. One local hosts a Sparks program for its veteran members and calls it "Embers." Another local hosts a Sparks program specifically for its paraprofessionals and calls it "Parachute."

70. Advertise your members’ businesses via a shop your local list!

Surveying your members and offer them the opportunity to promote their businesses to each other via an association advertised list. Encourage your members to shop each other’s businesses. Your members will be appreciative of the advertising that they will receive.
