Best practices for a retirement celebration

Postby JimBoice » May 21st, 2013, 7:10 pm

Retirement is an important milestone in life. Make your members feel special by honoring them for all the time they have invested in your school and students!

Most locals report success in holding end of the year retirement dinners for members. The retiring members are offered a ticket to attend the dinner; most locals extend a ticket to a guest of the retiree also. Some locals give gifts to their retired members, including jewelry (bracelets, watches, etc), gift cards, Lennox pieces (vases or frames), clocks, etc. One local purchases a glass apple with a gold stand for their retiring members, and a message of farewell is etched on the apple. (It is important to note that members’ dues dollars should not be used to purchase gift cards.)

At these celebrations, a few locals also honor any members who have achieved tenure in the past year and/or those members who have accumulated ten or twenty five years of service.

Some locals pay all costs of the event; others split costs with the board of education. Most invite administrators to their events. Catering halls or local restaurants serve as the venues for most retirement celebrations. Some locals hire a DJ.

Feel free to reply with a description of your local’s retirement celebration.

We met one local recently where the retirement dinner coincides with the last rep council meeting of the year. The local states that it invites principals and administrators and often recognizes them when they too retire. The local offers gift cards to retirees as well as fountain pens. The local gives each retiree an assignment: "in your retirement speech, tell one funny story from your career." Corsages and flowers and offered to retirees.

The local sends formal invitations to all members, and also invites retirees from the past ten years. A photo booth is on-site to take fun photos.

On the first day of school, during the association's general membership meeting, the president shows a video of the highlights of the previous year's dinner. This gets people excited to attend the coming year's event.
