Substitutes and Obamacare

Postby Steph » August 17th, 2013, 5:14 pm

Substitutes in my district (Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School) were sent a letter informing them that they would only be permitted to work for 3 days or they would be terminated as substitutes. If they are coaches, they may only be able to work 1 or 2 days. The BA tells me that it's because of Obamacare -- that if they work more than 30 hours, they have to be given health care. I think this is a ridiculous interpretation of the law.

My local doesn't represent subs, but this will affect my members. When we are short on subs for the day, teachers (and paras, sometimes) have to give up a period (usually a duty, but sometimes a prep) to fill a class. I'm afraid that this new policy will seriously affect my members.

Anyone else dealing with this?
