51. Offer a feedback form to members!

Do you offer a feedback form to your members following an association event or activity? Consider how it may help you prepare future events. Members like to offer their opinions and have good ideas, so don’t be shy about asking for them. Asking for feedback also helps to empower members. Consider a handout with a few questions or an online tool, such as survey monkey:

52. How do you market your association activities to members?

How do you market your association meetings and workshops to your members? Of course, it is hoped that members will attend due to the relevance of the topics. However, it’s fun to offer something special to members for giving their time. It also helps to let members know that you value their time. Locals report success offering members:

Brownies
Cupcakes
Pretzels
Hoagies
Cookies
Pizza
Hold a drawing for an association or NJEA sweatshirt, etc.

Also, be creative with the methods that you use to invite members to meetings. The wording of an invitation is important. Consider writing different invitations that are targeted at different groups.

53. Offer business cards to your new members. Consider including their school, position, grades / subjects taught (if applicable), email, school phone number, extension.

It would be nice if the cards were branded with a picture of their school and your association logo (or the NJEA logo).

Vistaprint offers 250 free business cards and may prove to be a good vendor for this project. Check them out:

Here's one of NJEA's Member Benefits partners that offers a great deal to NJEA members on business cards:

54. Thank members during Teacher Appreciation Week!

This entry is a companion to #34: "Thank members during American Education Week!"

"May 7, 2013 is National Teacher Day, a time for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives. This week, May 5-11, is designated Teacher Appreciation Week by the National PTA. It's a time to strengthen support and respect for teachers and the teaching profession."

Check out #34 for some ideas on how you can thank your members for all that they do for our students! Consider partnering with your school's PTA to do something really special!

Below is an article from njea.org that has more information and ideas. Make it a great week!

55. Host a library speaker series with your members!

Local libraries often offer evening events with speakers on a wide range of topics. Why not partner with your local library and encourage your members to make presentations to the community on topics that are of interest to them? Some master's degree programs make this a requirement, so organizing this initiative may help your members who are furthering their education. Turn the events into PRIDE projects and secure funding for refreshments and gifts for the participants. The community will be thankful for your members' time, and your members may appreciate this opportunity to connect with the community. Don't be afraid to reach out to your local library and let the staff know what you have to offer! :-)

56. A Mother's Day activity!

I heard from a local today that tried this fun Mother's Day event. The local used it to promote it's PRIDE in Public Education program (which, for the local, is new). However, you could use this to promote any of your local's programs or just do it for fun!

The local writes:

"Yesterday I came up with an idea to go along with other Teacher Appreciation Week activities in the building. I made four floral centerpieces and put them in the teachers' lounge with the refreshments that were provided by our PTA. I sent a flier to all our members to introduce our PRIDE program. Well, our members were talking about it all day and hoping to win the arrangements, which were lilacs, carnations, alstromeria, snap dragons, and dogwood. The men were even hoping to win since it was Mother's Day. I had one of our members draw the winning names. During the last period of the day, members of our local's exec board delivered the arrangements to the surprised winners' classrooms, and the winners were announced at the end of the day on the PA system. It was lots of fun and will do it again. Happy Mother's Day to all!"

57: Consider hosting a celebration for members who reach 10 and 25 years of service!

How can you honor these members for their time and make them feel special? What gifts could you give to offer thanks for all that they do?

58. Invite retired or veteran members to share inspiring stories with members!

These members can draw on their knowledge and experience to connect events from past struggles to what members are actually experiencing today. Members may find it interesting, even inspiring, to hear some of the struggles of the past and how members from their local association rose up to the challenges and emerged successful. Many of today's members have not personally experienced the power of collective action. From time to time someone tells them a war story – a strike in ‘78 or a fiscal crises and lay-offs in ‘80 – a story about the good old days.

Invite your veteran or retired members to tell their stories in ways that are concise, accurate, and relate to changing times, changing needs, and today’s education professional.

This concept is based upon the NJREA Speakers Bureau. Here's a story about it from the January 2012 NJEA Reporter:

Another article on the Speakers Bureau can be found in the March 2012 issue of the NJREA Newsletter. Check it out here on page 10:

59. Encourage your members (and students) to nominate their colleagues for Philadelphia Phillies Teacher Appreciation Night!

Wouldn't it be great if one of your members was recognized on the field before the first pitch of a Phillies game? All it takes is an essay about how special a particular member is.

If one of your members is lucky enough to be selected, consider reserving seats for a large group to attend to take part in the special moment!

Members can't nominate their colleagues if they don't know about the opportunity. Here's the information:

http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/phi/community/teacher_allstars.jsp

The Trenton Thunder has a similar program that is specifically for NJEA members:

60. Encourage veteran members to bring newer members with them to association sponsored workshops!

#'s 26 and 30 refer to association sponsored workshops. You may try increasing attendance to these events by encouraging veteran members and association leaders who attend to bring a newer member with them. This may help the newer member feel more comfortable attending because he or she will know someone there. Also, a personal invite from a colleague can be very encouraging. Try it!
