91. Host a Member Benefits Fair!

You may be aware of this popular event that is often held on the county level -- with each county hosting one or even two fairs each year. If you have never been to a Member Benefits fair, it's very exciting. NJEA's Member Benefits team brings together representatives from dozens of its hundreds of Member Benefits partners (i.e. Buyer's Edge, travel deals, discounts on eyewear, cell phone discounts, banking and insurance providers, etc.) all under one roof. Each representative typically hosts a table and provides information to members as well as fun giveaways and prizes. Dinner is often provided by the county association.

Larger local associations have reported success in working with the Member Benefits team to host their own Member Benefit fairs. Sometimes these local fairs are followed by a brief presentation from the Member Benefits team. Smaller locals encourage their members to attend the countywide events.

If you are interested in hosting a Member Benefits fair for your members, reach out to your NJEA UniServ field representative.

92. Offer a gift basket to your new members!

Instead of simply handing out tools, resources, and gifts to your new members during your orientation session, try putting together a nice package for members that could take the form of a gift basket. This friendly, welcoming approach will make your new members feel special and could make the event more memorable. In your basket, considering offering some of NJEA’s New Member Tools (including the Lifeline Portfolio) as well as district resources and forms; evaluation information and tips; fun things like stress balls, toys, and snacks; etc. Try putting your package together in a gift basket with nice wrapping, and maybe top it off with a bow and a welcome card written and signed by the local president (see #’s 39 and 66).

92. Do your members know their Weingarten Rights?

It is important for members to know their rights. Many local associations offer their members a small business card to carry in their wallets, purses, or within the ID badges on their lanyards. On the business card is printed a description of members’ Weingarten Rights as well as a statement that members could use when evoking the Weingarten Rights may be necessary. Your NJEA UniServ office will have cards for you to distribute to your members and can help explain Weingarten Rights to you and your members.

The cards may read something to the effect of:

“If this meeting could in any way lead to a change in the terms and conditions of my personal working conditions or my being disciplined or terminated, I respectfully request that my association representative be present at the meeting. Without representation, I choose not to answer any questions.”

The card might also add:

“If you are accused of child abuse:
• Remain silent!
• Do not meet with DYFS without an attorney!
• Put nothing in writing.
• Never sign what someone else writes about
the incident.
• Do not discuss the matter with anyone except an attorney.”

93. Consider organizing your members into a cash mob for a local business in your school’s community!

The concept of cash mobs is a recent phenomenon. How about organizing your members into this showing of support for a local business?

Consider targeting businesses in your community that are owned by families that send their children to your school district.

This idea comes to us from members of the Hunterdon Central Education Association. Thanks!

94. Sponsor a tailgate the first high school varsity football game of the season!

The first football game is an exciting event. How about getting your members together a little before the game to show their support for the students.? Your local association could provide shirts to your members and offer them lunch. Consider furthering this concept with PRIDE funding for a community outreach project (soft pretzels provided by the local association, a PRIDE promotional item such as a seat cushion or whistle, etc.). Consider organizing an activity around the homecoming game and other important sporting events. Have fun!

95. Promote the Staples Reward a Classroom program to your members.

Staples has been a Member Benefits partner of NJEA for many years. This exciting program from Staples offers generous savings to our members. Check it out and let your members know!

96. Host a contest with your building reps for the best association bulletin board!

Many local associations maintain bulletin boards in their faculty lounges (see #47). How about encouraging your ARs in each of your buildings to update the boards by creating a fun contest? Work with your exec board to establish criteria, and consider changing the criteria every few months with new contests to keep your boards fresh. Brainstorm a fun prize for your ARs, and consider asking your rep council to vote on the best board.

This idea comes to us from the Hopewell Valley EA. Thanks!

97. Recognize your members' birthdays on your social media outlets!

This one goes with #48. Use social media to connect with your members. We got this idea from the Trenton Education Association, where the Facebook editor sends birthday messages to members each morning. Way to go!

98. Keep members' spirits up during negotiations by recognizing their efforts!

Working without a contract can take its toll on your members' morale. When times get tough, don't forget to keep your members' spirits up. One way to do this is by writing a regular column in your association newsletter or other vehicle that recognizes all your members are doing for the local association and their students! Consider highlighting members' efforts to bring the negotiations to a fair settlement -- and don't be shy about putting members on blast who really step up for their association, schools, and students! For example, consider recognizing members who attend community functions; make phone calls; prepare signs, fliers, meals, and refreshments; etc.

This activity goes with #' 11. Institute a “thank-you column."

99. Need to communicate important information to your members during the summer months? Try a video!

We got this idea from the Long Branch School Employees Association (LBSEA), where the local president needed to hold a contract ratification over the summer months. The president made a short video for his members explaining the proposed changes. This way, members who could not attend the informational meetings would get all the necessary information in a more personalize way than an email.

The president worked closely with his njea UniServ field representative to ensure the video would be effective, so when considering this idea (and any idea involving videos for your members), reach out to your njea UniServ field representative for advice and suggestions.

Here is a link to the video produced by the LBSEA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJSxY58hgVQ
