New PRIDE event ideas!

Postby JimBoice » August 1st, 2013, 12:00 pm

This idea was sent to us by a county president. Christine read this article:

http://www.wboc.com/story/22928363/6th-annual-school-readiness-fair

Working with your school administration, consider hosting one of these events. School readiness fairs are great outlets to showcase to the parents of incoming students all the great projects and programs going on in your school.

Your local association can apply to PRIDE to purchase refreshments, giveaways, promotional items, etc.

What do you think? Discuss this idea with your local president and executive board, and feel free to run it by your NJEA UniServ field representative.

Host a Parent University in your schools!

In this activity, members return to school in the evening to teach not to their students, but their students' parents. We heard the Lopatcong EA did this a few years ago and found the event fun and successful.

To make the event work, Lopatcong EA members voluntarily returned to the building in the evening hours and hosted classes for parents. Parents, who had been invited via a promotional campaign, attended classes on topics such as:

PowerPoint
Yoga
Knitting
Spring
Landscaping
Italian
Scrapbooking
etc.

As you can see, members presented classes on hobbies and personal interests. Many parents attended and found the event informative and fun!

PRIDE can fund such a venture by covering the costs for advertising, meals, promotional material, etc.

What do you think?

We recently drove past a school that had this interesting advertisement. The sign was placed on the front lawn of the school and read, “Our True Champions.” Then, it listed, via columns, each branch of the military, and within each column were printed the names of all former students who are actively serving in the military.

Your local association could sponsor such a sign via PRIDE. PRIDE would pay for such a sign to be produced as well as the materials to hold it in place.

You could ask a member to make the sign (maybe an art teacher could do it with his or her classes), or you could consider having it professionally made. Consider ways to change the names as former students' deployments change, etc.

Although this isn't a "new" idea, we just found it in our files. This was a PRIDE project sponsored by the EA of Morris back in the day. . .

Sponsor a noteworthy graduates wall of fame in one (or all) of your district’s schools!

We have visited quite a few high schools lately that have an area set aside as the district’s “Wall of Fame.” These are usually localed by the guidance officers. Your local association could sponsor the plaques, photographs, and even a ceremony honoring those who make the “Wall.” In your to gain recognition, the wall should contain a plaque that reads something to the effect of, “The Wall of Fame is proudly sponsored by the Anytown Education Association.”

We got this idea from a field rep in another state.

Is one of your locals situated on or near a military base with parents servicing overseas? If so, how about organizing a PRIDE project in support of the community? It could look like this:

Bring in a local author to help students to write their autobiographies. Students then write their autobiographies and illustrate them, creating an official book. PRIDE funds could pay for the materials for the project.

Next, students could narrate their works and be recorded on DVD. The DVDs and books could be sent to the parents overseas. PRIDE can fund the cost of the DVDs as well as postage.

What a cool idea! Go for it!

Buy hot chocolates / coffees for your district's crossing guards!

It would be nice to think of them on a regular basis--maybe coffee / hot chocolate once a month or before a holiday. Crossing guards are typically parent volunteers, so it's nice to thank them for their work!
