140. Ask your newer, younger members to help you engage members!

We got this idea from our friends in the Arizona Education Association. It's one of those simple ideas that leave you asking yourself, why didn't we think of that?

Locals in the Arizona EA have had a lot of success by allowing millennium educators to play a more active role in recruitment and engagement. It got me thinking that local leaders here could call upon their millennium members for assistance.

Consider holding conversations with the millennium members that attend your workshops and events -- the ones who have shown some initiative. You could talk to those who you think would make great future association leaders, too. It might be fun to hold a meeting with them and ask them to help you promote the association and engage members. I'm sure they'll have some great ideas on how you can do that. Millennial members like to be asked about their opinions and like to see them acted upon. This will help them feel like they have a voice . . . and a place.

141. See your members at the NJEA Convention? Show them off!

The annual NJEA Convention in Atlantic City is attended by tens of thousands of members across the state. As a local leader, it's always fun to be on the lookout for your members that attend. It's even more fun to snap a quick pick when you see your members enjoying themselves in the halls, on the Convention floor, in High Tech Hall, etc. Then, post pics of your members in your newsletter, website, and social media resources. Make it fun!

142. We received this idea today from the president of the Washington Township Education Association of Gloucester County:

"We're starting a program next month to highlight our members. Each month we will be taking submissions from our members and will be selecting 1 member from elementary, 1 from middle schools, 1 from high school, and 1 from secretaries to highlight. We will post a write-up about the winners on our website, through Facebook, and twitter and I will personally visit their building to hold a 5 minute building meeting to honor them in front of their colleagues."

143. We noticed this idea on an association's Facebook page. A few days before each board of education meeting, the local posts the date, time, and location of the meeting as well as the name of the association members assigned to cover it. Any intersted member is invited to attend. This helps give recognition to the members attending the meeting and the valuable service that they provide for members.

144. We have noticed that some local leaders are encouraging their members (at least their local leaders) to identify themselves as members of the local association in their email's signature line. The officers and exec board members identify their positions within the local, and members often include the tagline, "Proud member of the ____________ Education Association" in their signature below their school position.

Cool idea!

145. Host a breakfast for your members before the in-service on election day!

Many district provide in-service training for staff members on election day. Such a day typically starts around 9 AM. We recently met a local president who offered a catered breakfast to all his members from 7:00 – 8:30 AM. The event was held in the cafeteria of the district’s high school. The local president also made election materials available concerning pro-public education candidates.

146. Host a "Party with a Purpose."

Throughout the ideas posted here is a running theme that membership meetings, events, and activities should be informative yet fun. Even at an event that seems purely social, anytime members get together, they undoubtably discuss work.

We met a local president recently who refers to each association sponsored social activity as a "party with a purpose." The local president says:

"Any time we get our members together, we try to cultivate the fun through our choice of location, agenda, etc. However, we make sure that we present our members with a cause to get behind -- whether it be something new or support for an ongoing initiative. The locations that we chose often bring people out, but they stay for the causes and continue to be involved."

I liked how the president said this, so I wanted to post it here.

147. Take an inventory of your members.

There are a lot of ideas here that recommend surveying your members, specifically #'s: 14, 16, 27, 35, 44, 45, 50, 69, 86, and 100.

It's a good idea to continually ask your members about their strengths and what they like to do besides basic statistical information. For example, if you know what your members like to do in their spare time, you can keep them in mind if an association activity comes along that matches their interest (such as, for example, a member who enjoys spending time with his or her dogs could coordinate a PRIDE project assisting the local dog shelter, etc.).

148. Show educational-themed films to your members!

We heard about a local in another state who will host movie nights for its members. Refreshments are provided, and a film with an educational theme is shown. The local recently showed the film Teach and got a decent number of members to come out (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/06/arts/television/davis-guggenheim-goes-to-school-with-new-film.html?_r=0).

Although our members are busy, this is an interesting idea that might be worth a try.

149. Leave some reading material in your school's faculty lounges!

We got this idea from the president of the East Windsor Education Association, who will be purchasing some educationally-relevant literature and leaving it in her schools' faculty lounges for member to enjoy.

The president plans to start with this book: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/wp/2013/07/16/the-worlds-most-famous-teacher-blasts-school-reform/

Thanks for the great idea!
