151. How old is your local?

Did you know that you can find out when your local was incorporated by logging into MARS, NJEA's membership data system? Local presidents and membership chairs have access to this software. Your NJEA UniServ office could also help you.

The reason we're telling you about this is, you and your members might be surprised to learn how old your local is. Your local might have a special birthday approaching (such as a 50th year anniversary) that you could celebrate with your members. In any case, it's might be fun to put a "Since 1964" (such as the Pennsauken Education Association) or "Established in 1923" (like the Camden Education Association) on your official association documents.

Let your members know how long you've been around, and that you're not going anywhere.

Check out how members from the Monroe Township EA celebrated its 50th here: http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/943ba8f9#/943ba8f9/12

153. Share discounts with your members.

Aside from great NJEA and NEA member benefits discounts that a detailed in this list (#52, #90, #95, and #135), be on the lookout for discounts for educators at your favorite stores. For example, here is a great list that we found on Facebook:

http://www.giftcardgranny.com/blog/the-complete-list-of-66-teacher-discounts/

The link above here includes information about a discount to the Philadelphia Zoo: http://www.weusecoupons.com/upload/teachers-r-i-p/153485-free-pass-philly-zoo-teachers.html

Here is some information about State of NJ employee discounts (some of which might just apply to NJEA members!): http://www.nj.gov/csc/employees/programs/discount/pdf/StateEmployeeDiscountsMasterList.pdf

Also, we just noticed this one from Sesame Place for a teacher's appreciation pass: http://www.pages02.net/seaworld/SPL2014Teacher/

We heard last night that Morey's Piers offers a day of free admission for members. For 2014, the day will be held on June 8th.

155. Encourage your members -- especially your new members -- to save for the summer.

If members are not 12-month employees, they should plan now to save for the months that they will not receive a paycheck. Many local associations have credit unions in which members may use automatic payroll deductions to save for the summer. Encourage members to not "get caught short" by joining one of these credit unions and starting a saving program.

156. Write a blog for your members!

Blogs have been a mainstay of the World Wide Web for what . . . twenty years now? They offer local leaders another outlet that they can use to engage their members, particularly on topics that are heady with opinion.

For example, blogs may offer your local a way to inform members on what's happening nationally with Common Core standards, the Broad Foundation Superintendents Academy, Teach for America, Race to the Top, etc. At least one NJEA local is using a blog in this way, and it can be found here:

157. Hang a copy of your professional certificate above your desk in your classroom!

Doctors and lawyers have their credentials hanging in their offices, and you should too! Make a copy of your certificate, frame it, and hang it in your classroom.

158. Give each of your members (especially your newer members) a copy of NEA's "Teach but don't touch" brochure.

This brochure is excellent. You can download it here:

159. Welcome newborns into your association.

When your members have children, consider sending a congratulations card to them. You could include information about member benefits discounts that new parents would find useful, information about relevant district policies, etc.
