161. Does your local help members write their maternity leave and leave of absence letters?
FMLA and NJ FLA can be complicated subjects. NJEA offers many trainings and workshops on this topic. NJEA trainers can even visit your local to conduct such a workshop (ask your field rep about it).
Many local leaders assist their members in writing these letters to the superintendent. Due to the complicated nature of the letters and the fact that someone should double check everything, this is a service that members really appreciate.
Many locals appoint a point person to handle the letters. In these locals, leaders start by distributing a form letter via a Word doc to all their members. Members then write the letters themselves, and the point person proofreads and revises the letters as needed.
Contact your NJEA UniServ field rep if you would like some assistance setting this up. Your field rep can even provide you with a starter sample form letter that you can customize to include provisions from your contract, district policies, etc.
