160. Can your local offer child care to members who wish to attend association workshops and events following the school day?

To date, we don't know of any locals doing this. One local is considering this as a way to help its members attend more of its workshops and events. The local is considering asking its retired members to assist the children with an activity, etc. This may be worth a try, and your members would appreciate your efforts.

161. Does your local help members write their maternity leave and leave of absence letters?

FMLA and NJ FLA can be complicated subjects. NJEA offers many trainings and workshops on this topic. NJEA trainers can even visit your local to conduct such a workshop (ask your field rep about it).

Many local leaders assist their members in writing these letters to the superintendent. Due to the complicated nature of the letters and the fact that someone should double check everything, this is a service that members really appreciate.

Many locals appoint a point person to handle the letters. In these locals, leaders start by distributing a form letter via a Word doc to all their members. Members then write the letters themselves, and the point person proofreads and revises the letters as needed.

Contact your NJEA UniServ field rep if you would like some assistance setting this up. Your field rep can even provide you with a starter sample form letter that you can customize to include provisions from your contract, district policies, etc.

162. Encourage members to host breakfasts for each other!

We got this idea from ESP members of the Sayreville EA. Some schools do this once a week, and some do this once a month. The members organize a "treat day," with members from different departments or halls bringing in breakfast for the entire staff on an alternating schedule. The members even go so far as to decorate and make the room festive. The members like it not only because it's a delicious way to start the day, but also because it brings members together in one place to socialize.

163. BOE recognition: don't forget to thank others!

Do you have a member being thanked or recognized by the Board of Education? Great! What could make the event even greater would be encouraging the member to thank others on the school team for their support. For example, recently we heard about a soccer coach being recognized at a Board of Education meeting for his 200th win. The soccer coach went to great lengths to thank the cafeteria staff who served his players healthy lunches, the bus drivers who always go the team to away matches safely and on-time, etc.

In telling us this story, the member also revealed that this award was given during a particularly rough round of negotiations with the Board. The Board meeting was packed, and association members and parents were so touched by his speech that did not stop clapping for the member for at least five minutes--even as the Board of Education president attempted to silence them with his gavel.

164. Assign one of your ARs to work exclusively with your new members!

We got this idea from the North Burlington County EA. The former president writes:

"At NBC I created an AR position that just worked with new members. When they had their AR meetings, they could focus solely on issues unique to new members, etc. It really paid off by bringing the new members into the association fold, and they really felt supported by NBC. It also gave me a steady stream of newer members I could tap into for future work. In fact, one of our newly tenured members who was part of the program is now the new member AR!"

165. Encourage your members to buy local around the holidays.

It would be fun to create a list of all the mom and pop shops in your school district and distribute it to your members around the holidays. You could also add a description of each business. Members who live in the community could help you generate the list. Your members and your community would appreciate your efforts.

166. Make a complete list of everything your local does and share it with members.

This idea goes with the thread, "Got Mission Statement": http://www.njea.org/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=132

We got this idea from the Camden County Council of Education Associations. Officers have made "What We Do" a part of the county association's website: http://cccea.homestead.com

Try it! Make a list of everything your local does, and share it with members. Your members may be surprised by what they see and say, "I didn't know about that?"

167. Host a "white elephant party" for your new members.

We got this idea at a recent Engaging Minds, Engaging Members Roundtable held at the Camden County EA. This idea goes with #49: Donate your extra teaching materials and supplies to help support first-year, brand new teachers.

Upon collecting the items from your veteran members, bring your new members together and host a white elephant gift party. New members would choose items in the order you determine and later "steal" any previously chosen items.

You can learn more about hosting a white elephant gift party here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_elephant_gift_exchange

168: do your members know they are entitled to a 30% discount on legal services?

Learn all about it here and share the information with your members:

169: celebrate your local association once a year!

We got this idea for the East Windsor Education Association. Once a year, members celebrate the date the local was incorporated. Members are encouraged (and allowed) to wear their association shirts to school on this date, and any member who does donates $5 to the NJEA Fund for Children and Public Education (http://www.neafund.org/events/nea-fund-make-a-contribution/event-summary-29dd9fffd7f34e9b878ea8944121e399.aspx). The local offers treats for members in all the faculty lounges.

Sounds like a great idea! This can be considered a companion idea to #151: How old is your local?
