July – August
Prepare boxes or baskets filled with highlighters, office supplies, etc. Include light-hearted items such as candy, and anything else you wish. Enclose a card wishing new members success in their new jobs from your local association. The card can be signed by the local president, the committee members, and the association rep(s).
Welcome Card or Letter
As your new members are hired, or during the week before the start of the school year, send a card or letter of introduction from your local president welcoming them to the association. The card should provide the member with the president’s phone number and/or contact information; the name and number of an association-assigned buddy who will shortly contact them; and/or an association representative to look up on the first day of school. The local association representative responsible for the new member should meet with him/her in a one-on-one setting.
Community Bus Tour
Some school systems provide a bus tour of the community for new members. If your system does not provide such a tour, you may wish to consider this option; but beware, this is work. You will definitely have to delegate this to others. Select two or three members or retired members who have been in the area for a long time. They will be able to add the local flavor to make the tour interesting, entertaining, and fun. Be sure to include schools, ethnic neighborhoods, shopping tips, good restaurants, industries, shortcuts, and hangouts.
