NJEA President Marie Blistan has published a new op-ed in InsiderNJ commending Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin for his proposal to allow borrowing to stabilize the state’s budget, but also calling on him to post and pass the Ch. 78 relief bill that has already passed the senate and promises hundreds of millions of dollars in relief for hard-hit school districts and educators alike. She notes that passing the bill quickly will allow school districts to realize the savings in time for the new school year, when budgets are expected to be tight and every dollar will be needed.
It comes on the heels of an earlier op-ed in the Star Ledger also calling for the New Jersey General Assembly to pass the Ch. 78 relief and ESP Job Justice bills that overwhelmingly passed the Senate two months ago. Pointing out that it is an opportunity to provide long-needed relief and fairness for educators, while also saving money for school districts facing extremely challenging budget situations, she urged the Assembly to act quickly to put the bills on the desk of Gov. Murphy, who has repeatedly pledged to sign them.
