SCOTUS DACA ruling helps students

NJEA’s officers, President Marie Blistan, Vice President Sean M. Spiller and Secretary-Treasurer Steve Beatty, issued this statement lauding the United States Supreme Court Decision upholding protections for Dreamers under the Obama-era Delayed Action on Childhood Arrival (DACA) rules:

“The Supreme Court’s decision on DACA sends an important message to America’s Dreamers that they are seen, valued and respected in the eyes of the law. In an era of so much hostility toward immigrants it is encouraging to know that our nation’s highest court sided with justice over fear and compassion over callousness. Most Dreamers had no choice in when and how they came to America, but they have used the opportunities available here to learn, grow and become valuable contributors to strength of our diverse, vibrant nation. The Court’s ruling allows them to focus on the future without fear of their American dream being snatched away after having invested so much in achieving it. For those Dreamers who are still students, we are thrilled that they can continue their studies, secure in the knowledge that justice has come down on their side. As we all strive to build a stronger and more just nation for our children, the contributions of Dreamers will continue to be essential. While the fight for immigrant justice is far from over, this ruling gives us reason to celebrate another step forward. It also reinforces our determination to fight injustice everywhere, because it demonstrates that just outcomes are possible when good people simply refuse to give up.”
