SUMMARY:Designing Pluralistic Social Studies Curricula with Generative AI
DESCRIPTION:This interactive professional development workshop empowers educators with the knowledge and tools to leverage Generative AI—such as ChatGPT and Gemini—for designing inclusive\, equitable K–12 social studies curricula. Rooted in pluralistic pedagogy\, the session explores how AI can assist in generating historically accurate\, standards-aligned content that highlights the voices and contributions of Black\, Asian American\, Indigenous\, Latinx\, and other historically marginalized communities. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of how AI-assisted instruction works\, including the rationale behind prompt engineering and effective strategies for designing prompts that yield high-quality\, inclusive responses. The session also covers strategies to guard against potential biases in AI-generated content\, as such biases can often be amplified by the internet-sourced training data used to develop these models. Through hands-on activities and collaborative discussions\, educators will learn how to integrate AI thoughtfully into their lesson planning process—enhancing instructional design\, supporting student engagement\, and encouraging critical inquiry into U.S. history from multiple perspectives. By the end of the workshop\, participants will walk away with concrete tools\, sample prompts\, and adaptable strategies for incorporating AI into the development of high-quality\, pluralistic social studies lessons that reflect the richness and diversity of American experiences. \nPresenters: Dr. Ying Lu & Dr. Kim Pinckney.

SUMMARY:Team Liberty’s Shadow: Why New Jersey was the Last Northern State to Abolish Slavery
DESCRIPTION:What you probably didn’t learn in school is that New Jersey was once known as “the slave state of the North.” It was the last Northern state to ratify the 13th Amendment\, which abolished slavery in the United States. By 1830\, New Jersey held 67% of the enslaved population living in the North\, and the last 16 enslaved people in Bergen County were not freed until 1866—three years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today\, Bertrand F. Gibbs Elementary School in New Milford\, Bergen County\, sits atop a historic African American burial ground\, a sobering reminder of this often-overlooked history.

SUMMARY:Neurodiversity + Queer Identity
DESCRIPTION:This talk explores the well-documented overlap between the Queer community and how neurodivergent individuals “queer” their lives—whether they identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community\, the neurodivergent community\, or both. The discussion is grounded in understanding intersectionality\, as defined by Kimberlé Crenshaw. \nIn this workshop\, we will also explore the concept of minority stress\, as defined by Virginia Brooks\, and discuss the importance of creating space for “neuroqueering ” and the need for sex education that is more inclusive of neurodiverse experiences.
