SUMMARY:Teaching Is Political: Advocating and Organizing for Social Change 2022 Summer Collaborative
DESCRIPTION:Program dates: July 11-14\, 2022 \n10 a.m.-4 p.m. (in-person only) \nIn July 2022\, the Radical Pedagogy Institute will host its second Summer Collaborative\, Teaching is Political: Advocating and Organizing for Social Change. Twenty New Jersey area educators will be invited to gather for four days to research issues related to the current political landscape as it pertains to education (e.g.\, critical race theory bans\, teacher shortage\, trans sport bans\, voter suppression)\, learn organizing strategies to fight injustice\, and develop and receive feedback on plans to enact organizing strategies and take direct action to fight injustice in their local communities. \nThis in-person event will take place at Rutgers University-Newark. \nRegistration for the Summer Collaborative is $150.00. Interested educators can register at https://radicalpedagogyinstitute.com/membership-account/membership-levels/ through June 27\, 2022. \nThe Summer Collaborative is designed for PK-12 teachers and teacher educators in New Jersey. The collaborative will provide these educators with tools and means to fight instances of injustice in their school communities. Through their organizing and advocacy efforts\, this project will also impact the education outcomes of these educators’ PK-12 students and preservice teachers. \nSnacks will be available\, but registered participants should plan to bring their own lunches (or purchase from nearby restaurants). \nFor more information\, email Leah Owens at l.owens@radicalpedagogyinstitute.com.

SUMMARY:NJEA RISE Up in HOPE Conferences
DESCRIPTION:CONFERENCE FOR HOPE & HEALING\n\nOn July 13\, join us for a day of Hope and Healing sponsored by NJEA in partnership with Alisha De Lorenzo and KYDS Co-Founders\, Rodney Salomon and Mychal Mills. This full day immersion will unite an embodied experience of movement\, mindfulness\, breath work\, sound healing and transformational self-inquiry with an understanding of the inner work required to create healing-centered and just educational communities. \nThrough deep connection with self and others\, these powerful self-care practices will awaken the healing within each of us that positions educators as the healers of our systems\, schools and communities. Working at the intersection of healing\, trauma and (social justice/anti-oppression)\, we will answer the call to cultivate cultures of wellness. Come as you are\, leave with a renewed commitment to the possibilities of Hope and Healing in education. \nRADICAL IMAGINATION SUMMIT FOR EDUCATORS (RISE)\nOn July 14\, join us for a day of exploration that infuses the power of poetry\, movement\, music and community cultural wealth. NJEA’s Radical Imagination Summit for Educators (RISE) is back! From Dr. Bettina Love’s Abolitionist Teaching in 2020 to Dr. Cornel West’s message of radical love in 2021; from our powerful student keynotes to our virtual block party with DJ Omé; we have stretched the boundaries of critical dialogue and infused joy in justice throughout our union spaces. \nRadical – affecting the fundamental nature of something; far-reaching \nImagination – the ability of the mind to be creative or resourceful \nSummit – top; apex; the highest point; the topmost level attainable \nEducators – K-12 public school teachers and education support professionals \nIn this space\, we are invited to stretch our radical imagination around what is possible when we collectively envision and build together toward a more just\, equitable and liberatory public education system in New Jersey. \nREGISTER\nRegister for one or both conferences using either the registration form below for mail-in payment\, or the Register button for online registration with a credit card. \n \n\n\n	\n	\n\n Rise Up in Hope Conference Registration Form\n\n \n \n Download File

SUMMARY:Raising Brains Post Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Post pandemic\, teachers must meet an increasing number of social-emotional needs along with varying academic levels. In order to meet the New Jersey Student Learning Standards\, teachers must have a good understanding of how to create classrooms that support the development of social-emotional skills as well as academic skills. \n\n\n\nBy understanding brain development in children\, teachers can work with\, instead of against\, natural brain patterns\, which makes what they already do so well more successful. Teachers need support in gaining the skills to create a growth mindset classroom that focuses on the creation of goals for individual students\, methods for teaching students how to create their own goals and achieve them\, and strategies that support student growth but do not overtax teachers. Brain Behavior Bridge wants students to gain self-understanding and insight and to assist teachers in focusing on helping their students meet the appropriate learning standards. \n\n\n\nThis training helps teachers pull all their prior continuing education together in an efficient and effective approach that supports brain growth and frees teachers to teach. \n\n\n\nExplore the neuroscience of learning\, matching existing tools with brain styles\, a growth mindset\, and mental health. \n\n\n\nBrain basics: Learn how brains work—yours and your students! Understand neuropsychology basics and how to apply this knowledge to the classroom. \n\n\n\nInnie or outie? Determine what innie brains and outie brains are and why that matters to educators when deciding which tools to use. \n\n\n\nNot new tools\, new ways Educators are inundated with new tools to use in the classroom to manage behavior\, improve academic outcomes\, and more. Instead of new tools\, learn how to match the tools you already have to the brain type of each student for better results. \n\n\n\nFee:  $24.99 \n\n\n\nRegistration: You may register up to Aug. 2 at https://www.brainbehaviorbridge.com/educators.

SUMMARY:NJEA Jack Bertolino Summer Leadership Conference (SLC)
DESCRIPTION:Most workshops offer 7.5 hours of training. A longer workshop providing additional hours of training is available for newer presidents and other local officers. \n\n\n\nThere are two sets of three-day programs: \n\n\n\n\nWorkshop I – Aug. 6-8 (Saturday to Monday)\n Workshop II – Aug. 8-10 (Monday to Wednesday)\n\n\n\n\nNot all of the 30 workshops are offered in each workshop period. The workshop descriptions provided on the following pages indicate when any given program is scheduled. To accommodate educational support professional members (ESP) who may wish to limit use of vacation or personal time\, Workshop Number 20 runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. \n\n\n\nFor all other workshops\, registration begins on Day One at 1 p.m. The first program\, a “mini-course\,” begins at 4:15 p.m. Day Three ends with a brunch\, which is served at 10:30 a.m. following the final workshop session. \n\n\n\nThis year’s summer leadership conference will take place at Hilton East Brunswick. The conference is dedicated to developing association advocate representatives. Accordingly\, no professional development credit is given for attendance in any seminar. \n\n\n\nHow do I register?\n\n\n\nIf you are an NJEA member\, you are eligible and encouraged to attend this summer leadership conference offering 30 advocacy workshops. You will find topics that will prepare you for your current or future roles\, sharpen your leadership skills and show you how your local can develop to its full-functioning capacity. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of this article is to alert members to this training opportunity and describe the 30 workshop programs available this year\, but to register you need to talk to your local and/or county association president. \n\n\n\nLocal and county association presidents will receive registration brochures with detailed information on the 2022 NJEA Jack Bertolino Summer Leadership Conference. You must contact your local president and consult that brochure to learn more about lodging\, daily schedules\, accommodations for members with special needs\, and registration. \n\n\n\nIf you have a special physical or communication need or other disability that may require assistance or accommodations to permit or facilitate your attendance and participation\, or if you have any questions or concerns about housing arrangements\, please contact NJEA by June 1 at slc@njea.org or at 609-599-4594\, ext. 2270. \n\n\n\nScholarships\n\n\n\nScholarships are available for first-time attendees. See your local and/or county president for more information. \n\n\n\nHealth and safety protocols\n\n\n\nSLC is planned to be an in-person conference this year. However\, during the pandemic\, all arrangements are subject to change in response to public health directives. Current NJEA policy requires that face masks must be worn. In addition\, all attendees are required to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have had a negative result on a PCR test within 72 hours prior to the beginning of the conference. Registrants will be notified of the health and safety protocols well before the conference so necessary precautions can be made to meet the requirements\, if any. \n\n\n\nWhich workshop(s) should I take?\n\n\n\nNJEA offers many advocacy conferences with a large array of workshops. Selecting which to take can be a daunting task. Whether you are currently serving in a leadership position or you have aspirations to become involved in some capacity within your local association\, there are trainings that can help develop and hone your skills. To guide you\, positions within the association are listed on this page\, followed by workshops that would be beneficial to you. You will discover that being an officer is not the only position within your association and there are opportunities to get involved in other ways. Additionally\, we have included a track for those exploring future leadership. Please note that not all of these workshops are offered at the Summer Leadership Conference and may be offered at other conferences throughout the year. These courses are not listed in any particular order and are not mandatory to serve in any position. Not all of the workshops offered at the Summer Leadership Conference are listed\, so please review this menu of workshops before making your selection.
