SUMMARY:Censorship in schools: Information literacy and social justice implications for educators
DESCRIPTION:The nationwide flood of book censorship creates chaos in classrooms and libraries. This workshop will review the most recent trends in book challenges and consider the social justice impact of censorship in the classroom and school library. Recent legislation requiring a stand-alone NJ K-12 information literacy standard (S588\, signed earlier this year) places access to information and book censorship on a collision course. Research that defends the freedom to read and the importance of addressing complicated subjects in the classroom will add to your educator toolbox\, so you can address book or other material challenges with integrity\, dignity and assurance. \nPresenters:       \nAmy Penwell & Tricina Strong-Beebe\nNew Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL)

DESCRIPTION:When it comes to knowing what’s best for schools and students\, there’s no better resource than educators and school employees.  However\, many don’t know what’s involved when they are interested in expanding their advocacy beyond the classroom to a seat on the board of education.  This training will provide a brief\, and often humorous\, overview of what being a board member entails—from campaigning to navigating board responsibilities once elected—as experienced by several current board members. \nPresenters: \n\nLori Cintron\, NJEA Field Representative\nTom Hayden\, NJEA Field Representative\nBrian Rock\, Associate Director for Membership
