In November 2015, the NJ Department of Education (NJDoE) approved changes to the requirements for provisional teachers to earn a standard certificate. The most relevant requirements are briefly explained in the PDF below. Most importantly, the advisory includes time-sensitive information for 2nd year provisional teachers.

In late April, the NJDoE notified districts of their immediate responsibilities in this process and provided a recommended May 15, 2017 deadline for standard certification applications. A link to the department broadcast is included in the advisory.

Some districts are out of compliance with new rules and procedures relative to provisional licensing, mentoring, etc. This can lead to serious licensing issues for members and could potentially impact their future employment and/or tenure status. The new process which the department rolled out in late April presents the risk of further issues for our newer teachers since many of them began their employment under the previous requirements.
