NJEA is pleased to support S-817 sponsored by Senators Smith, Turner, Beck & Madden. This bill establishes temperature control guidelines and standards for school facilities.
Currently, there are no guidelines that require school districts to create a temperature controlled environment within school facilities. Children in some schools are continuously subjected to excessive heat or extreme cold in their classrooms without any concrete solution. The temperature in schools should be at an acceptable level that is conducive to learning. Teaching, learning and attendance are likely to suffer when temperatures rise too high or fall too low.
This bill will set guidelines for proper air quality in school facilities. New Jersey needs to join states like New York, which have already passed similar legislation. This bill is necessary because a proper learning environment is essential to student achievement.
