NJEA’s officers, President Marie Blistan, Vice President Sean M. Spiller and Secretary-Treasurer Steve Beatty issued this statement following the sad news of the passing of Congressman John Lewis yesterday:

“We join all of America in expressing our sadness at the passing of Congressman John Lewis, a civil rights icon whose long fight for justice continued to the very end of his life. His career of service to his country and to the cause of racial justice made a profound difference in countless lives.  We will remember him as one of the towering figures of our time, and we pledge, along with our 200,000 colleagues across New Jersey, to continue working and advocating for the principles that he held so dear and sacrificed so much to achieve. By sheer force of will and through his passionate commitment to doing what was right, he helped bend the long arc of the moral universe toward justice. Though his work here is done, his legacy lives on. He will be missed.”
