Sweeney proposal would add much-needed revenue to state budget

NJEA released this statement regarding Senate President Sweeney’s declaration this weekend that he supports a millionaires tax, as well as additional funding for the New Jersey pension systems.

“We thank Senator Sweeney for his efforts to live up to the state’s obligation to make up for its decades of pension funding neglect. Dedicating significant new revenue to pensions, while continuing to make the other investments necessary to build a stronger, fairer New Jersey, will send an important message to both current educators and those who are considering the profession. We also look forward to working with Senate President Sweeney, Assembly Speaker Coughlin and Gov. Murphy to lower heath care costs for both educators and employers, so our members can invest more in their families and New Jersey can invest more in our top-rated public schools. Likewise, we look forward to working with those leaders to bring job justice to our Educational Support Professionals. As we have demonstrated many times, when educators are at the table for these discussions, we can achieve real results that benefit everyone.”
