I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for making it possible for the Cat in the Hat to visit Manito Elementary School on Tuesday, February 25. The children had an awesome time with him and we are so excited to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss next week! It was a wonderful experience for all and we are truly appreciative.

-- Mrs. Kathleen Woodward, Manito Elementary School, Oakland

Through the efforts of Pre-K teacher, Michelle Solowinski, School No. 1 Pre-k was the recipient of a grant allowing the Cat in the Hat to visit our school today, February 20, 2014.  This helped to kick off our commemoration of Read Across America which will take place March 3-7.  Children wished the Cat in the Hat a Happy Birthday/Feliz Cumpleanos for Dr. Seuss, in English and Spanish, and were eager to shake hands with the infamous character.

-- Judy Trawinski, Assistant Principal, Thomas Jefferson School #1, Vincent Capuana School #15, Passaic City

What a wonderful experience we had with our special visitor.  The Cat made his appearance on February 29.  He was greeted by 375 excited K-2 students.  Due to a scheduling error, we had to have the children in the gymnasium, but he went around and shook hands with as many children as he could.  He took pictures with many of our students and our principal, Maria Santa (who was dressed in black, white and red and wore the Cat in the Hat’s hat).  Thank you NJEA and retired staff for making this program possible.  Our staff and especially our students loved it.

--Cathleen Cahn, PS#5, Paterson

-- Kristi Matusz, Hainesport Township School District

The Cat in the hat stopped by to help serve cake for Dr. Seuss' birthday party at the Schuyler School (Kearny) Read Across America celebration. The Cat helped to serve cake before sharing his message of "Keep Reading" to Schuyler's students. He brought a gift of a copy of The Lorax (autographed by The Cat) to the school library. The Cat in the Hat was a wonderful surprise guest bringing smiles to all at the party - students and teachers alike! Thanks to the NJEA for our special surprise guest at our party.

Read Across America is a day that is enjoyed by children throughout the country. Riley school made this year’s celebration even more special. Students in the second grade were able to come together and Skype with an author. With the coordination of Mrs. Noland, a computer teacher at the school, and help from Mr. Whalen, the students were able to speak with Elizabeth Raum. Elizabeth Raum is a New Jersey native and has been known for her nonfiction pieces. She has branched out to the world of fiction, which she shared with the students at Riley School. Through video conferencing, Mrs. Raum shared her story, Cedric and the Dragon. The students were thrilled to be able to hear her story and loved being able to use Skype. The infusion of technology has broadened the classroom for our students and allowed us to connect with people outside of the walls of our school. This will certainly be a Read Across America Day to remember for our second grade classes.

-- Desiree Noland, Roosevelt Elementary School
