Atlantic County educator Laurie Derringer from Hamilton Township School District, was awarded a $6,786 continuation grant to carry out a STEM project at Joseph Shaner Elementary School in Mays Landing.

This grant provides 10 Kindergarten classrooms with open ended STEM materials that will be used during choice time each day.  Teachers will use the Teaching Strategies GOLD online assessment system to take photos and video of the students’ creations, make observational notes about students’ ability to interact with peers, solve problems, attend and engage and use scientific inquiry skills.

The feedback from teachers and students about phase 1 of the grant that was implemented during the 2019-2020 school year has been overwhelmingly positive and made a wonderful impact on our early childhood program. The benefit of this type of grant is that these materials will be part of the classroom environment for many years to come.

This continuation grant will provide resources to the entire grade level.  The teachers who received the materials last year are grateful and remaining teachers are excited about this new opportunity. These materials have made a positive impact for our students.
