Looking for a fun activity that celebrates reading and our great state?  Then take part in the first annual “Nicky Fifth’s Read Across America- NJ” contest!

Nicky Fifth is a character created by former NJEA member and author Lisa Willever, a former educator and life-long proponent of supporting reading and New Jersey’s great public schools.  The ever-popular series focuses on promoting and bringing New Jersey to life as Nicky Fifth and his friends travel the state and meet wonderful and diverse people along the way.  Learn more about author Lisa Willever and the Nicky Fifth series here.

This contest aims to encourage students to read and learn more about New Jersey—and the places and people that make it so great—while also making reading and learning fun and meaningful.  Open to educators in grade levels 3 through 5, the contest requires the educator and students to read one of the Nicky Fifth books as a class, complete the accompanying core-curriculum standards-approved activities, then submit a 250-word essay describing what makes New Jersey (and its people!) special.   The top ten submissions will each receive a complete set of Nicky Fifth books (10 in total) for their school library.

The winning essay will receive a visit from the author, Lisa Willever, on or about March 2, when she will announce them as the recipients of the grand prize:  She will be their tour guide on an all-expenses paid field trip to their choice of one of New Jersey’s landmarks featured in the book, so they can all have their own “Nicky Fifth” adventure.  Field trips will take place in the spring after PARCC testing is concluded.

Each of the 10 finalists will be provided with a press release to promote the class/school’s participation in the Nicky Fifth RAA-NJ contest and the resulting donation of books to the school library.  These classes/schools will also be spotlighted on our social media properties.

NJEA’s mission is to create an optimal environment to achieve excellence in public education in New Jersey.  There is no better way to do that than to find clever, unique and innovative ways to celebrate our state and its diverse population of readers.  Fill out the form below to get started today!

Contest ends on Jan. 31. All essays must be submitted electronically to Cat@njea.org by Feb. 5, so don’t delay!
