Deep in Sheep

Taryn Romanczak and Adrianna Ruggieri of Hunterdon County Polytech in Hunterdon County were awarded a $7,840 grant that will give eleventh and twelfth-grade students in a four-year animal science program the opportunity to care for sheep and lambs, particularly related to livestock reproduction and management.  Students have the opportunity to care for and learn about sheep through the duration of their pregnancy.  Activities include:  ultrasounding, parasitology, vaccinations and diseases, monitoring and evaluating nutritional needs throughout pregnancy.  In addition, students have the opportunity to be present at all the lambings and assist in the processing of neonatal lambs.  Students continue to care for the lambs until they return to the farmer in the spring. “This project provides students with invaluable and unique hands-on experience to help prepare them for their futures in animal science.”
