NJEA RISE Speaker Series

Join us for the 2026 NJEA RISE Speaker Series, a two-day virtual program featuring educators and thought leaders committed to equity, justice and transformative learning.

Event Description

This year’s theme, “Education as a Tool for Liberation,” invites participants to explore how culture, identity, and professional practice contribute to liberatory educational spaces. 

Each day includes a Welcome, a Fellowship Flash Talk, a Connected Idea Presentation, and a 30minute keynote session (20 minutes of speaking and 10 minutes of Q&A). 

Day 1 – May 8, 2026

Featured Speaker: Gabriel Tanglao
Manager, Human and Civil Rights Department, National Education Association
Gabriel Tanglao will speak on how education can serve as a tool for liberation through the lens of AAPI heritage, community experience, and cultural traditions. His keynote invites participants to reflect on identity, solidarity, and the role of culture in building inclusive and transformative learning environments.  

Day 2 – May 9, 2026

Featured Speaker: Dr. Nicki Washington
Professor of the Practice, Computer Science and Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies, Duke University
Dr. Nicki Washington will discuss how education can challenge systemic barriers and expand access, drawing from her work in computer science, identity, and culturally responsive educational practice. Her keynote examines how educators can build systems that support meaningful liberation for all learners.
