NJEA President Steve Beatty, Vice President Petal Robertson and Secretary‑Treasurer Tina Dare issued this statement on the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson:
“We join civil rights advocates across America and around the world in mourning the passing of Rev. Jesse Jackson. He was a towering figure in America’s still-unfinished struggle for civil rights and a lifelong champion for justice, equality and human dignity. Rev. Jackson marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and helped carry King’s message to a new generation. He rose to prominence as one of the most influential advocates for voting rights, economic opportunity and social progress in the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond as he continued to speak boldly for the marginalized and to advance movements for fairness and representation in every community. His credible showings in the 1984 and 1988 Democratic presidential primaries inspired a generation of Black leaders to pursue offices and opportunities that once seemed out of reach.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones. His legacy of courage, conviction and hope will continue to guide all of us who remain committed to building a more just and equitable society.”
