Raku Pottery

Jaime Cream, an art teacher from the Cherry Hill School District in Camden County, was awarded a $8,000 grant to enhance her existing 3D Art Curriculum with a Raku Pottery Program, reaching 300 students each year. This hands-on, culturally rich experience introduces students to the beauty and technique of Raku pottery, a centuries-old Japanese ceramic tradition.  Together, students will explore not only the art form itself, but also the fascinating story of how Raku traveled from Japan to America, adapting and inspiring new generations of artists. “This is such an exciting opportunity for students to experience the Raku process,” Jaime shared. “It’s a rare chance to work with this unique firing method at the high school level, and I’m thrilled to bring it to our program.” Through creating their own Raku pieces, students will gain a deeper appreciation for its cultural heritage, artistic philosophies, and the value of diverse perspectives.
