Stillwater Education Association organizes virtual 5K to remember beloved Spanish teacher

By Meghan Radimer, Sussex County Teacher of the Year

The Stillwater Education Association recently set-up a virtual 5k to honor and remember their Spanish Teacher, Frank Carchia, who passed away unexpectedly in December 2020.

The First Annual Nacho Average 5k was set-up to establish a scholarship in Frank’s name as well as raise scholarship funds for the Stillwater Education Association’s Philanthropic Fund. Frank loved coming up with puns and creating puzzles, but his greatest passion was teaching kids. Frank had a magical way of engaging students of all ages through his ever-changing style. His haircut, hair color, costumes, clothing, hats, and disguises made him fun and endeared him to his students and colleagues alike!

More than 230 participants registered to participate in the virtual 5K. Participants had the choice to run, walk, jog, hike, etc. the 5K on either Saturday, May 1, 2021 or Sunday, May 2, 2021.  There was a live kickoff via Zoom that participants joined to officially start the race weekend. Runners also had the chance to order shirts to commemorate the event.

Everyone had a great time and as an association we were able to raise more than $4,000 which will fund four scholarships for our graduating 6th grade students, as well as two scholarships for high school seniors who attended Stillwater Elementary School.
