Where History Lives! Researching & Recording Home Town History

Mercer County educator Miriam Clark from Hamilton Township Schools, was awarded a $2,718 grant to carry out a project for Greenwood Elementary School in Hamilton.

After taking a survey about the community, students will study American and community history to identify themes used create a 40’ multicultural timeline reflecting 400 years of history. The time line will include canvas panels that illustrate American history and ones that share community history. Students will also create a community website timeline and interview and photograph community residents.

Students will use this information to write and illustrate an addendum to the text “Traveling Through Time.” Sections will also be written in Spanish and French Creole to reflect the languages spoken in the community.

Parents and community members will be invited to an evening event at school to view the timeline, canvas panels, and addendum. Guests will be asked to add to the timeline.

The project will be assessed through pre- and post- surveys, rubrics, student reflections, and the quality of student work.
